SELLER SAYS: This 11/1984 compliance BMW R65 classic bike is just a two owner, for the most part restored gem with only 77,645km on the clock. Restoration includes fork and brake master cylinder rebuilds together with brake and fuel line, battery and spark plug replacements. Oils all changed. Test run with engine tuned, starting and running sweetly. Rare for an R65, the bike boasts a BMW GS model style Paris-Dakar long range fuel tank fitted from the showroom. Also featuring a Krauser pannier set together with top box addition and the added comfort of a lamb's wool seat cover delivering this bike as all set for overnight touring. Features original Staintune exhaust system. Will be sold with a BMW original windscreen and cylinder-head-saving crash bar, both currently unfitted now. The bike was last registered in Victoria, Australia. It is not currently registered. See more photos and a video here. Contact Murray on 0417 549 022 (Melbourne, Vic.)

EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: If ever there was a bike to prove that long-distance competence did not need a big engine or big road footprint, it was BMW's highly regarded R65. Blessed with the same frame but shorter swingarm and different front-end geometry — and thereby a shorter wheelbase — than its big brothers, the R65 delivered a marvellous mid-size solution for folks who either didn't want or didn't need a large motorcycle. And yet it was still perfectly capable of carrying a pillion and plenty of luggage, and in the case of Murray's bike, plenty of fuel as well. The smaller dimensions of the R65 won favour among less-large riders (aren't we polite?) but also to those who preferred something a bit more nimble and fun in the corners and on B-grade roads. This bike of Murray's presents very well indeed, and those 77-odd thousand kays are remarkably low for a near 40-year-old open road bike — and barely run-in for a boxer-engined Beemer. SELLER SAYS: 1981 BMW R100 RS for sale. In excellent condition. This bike is a numbers-matching, all-original example that looks almost like it came off the show room floor. It has just recently undergone a comprehensive refresh, where almost everything was stripped, cleaned, recoated or replaced. It runs and rides beautifully and is tuned to perfection. The bike is ready with no work needed and will not disappoint. The frame has been freshly powder-coated in gloss black (very good job) and perfectly compliments the elegant, excellent condition gloss black paint on the bodywork and tank. It has had its carbies fully, professionally overhauled and they look like new. During strip down, many consumable parts have been replaced, including new clutch, brakes, bearings, seals and new tyres. It really is an excellent example and simply must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Please call if you have any questions. Contact Bert on 0416 181 890 (Perth, WA).

EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: In the early 1970s when much of the world was predicting the end of the British motorcycle industry (not unreasonably, as it turned out), Norton was doing all it could to turn the tide. The long-loved but long-in-the-tooth Commando was beefed up from 750 to 850 and given, shock horror, an electric starter, while company chairman Dennis Poore (with help from some sponsorship money courtesy of John Player Special cigarettes) told the team to get out there and win some races. And they did. The records show Norton pulled off 14 international race wins in 1972 and '73, many of them on the so-called John Player Specials. Ever keen to profit from track success, Norton started production of an 850 Commando JPS. Only 200-odd were sold, most of them going to the USA. This bike has just 8,000 miles on the clock and replicates one the owner had stolen in Paris, hence the unusual black-and-gold paintwork, back in 1975. See more photos here.

EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When Japanese manufacturers launched a series of reliable, well-built, high-performance, large-capacity motorcycles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it set the motorcycle world on its ear. By and large, British manufacturers were already in turmoil and their response was confused, slow coming, and a little clumsy. And it didn't work. Harley-Davidson responded by cashing in on its ever-reliable patriotic line that 'American motorcyclists buy American motorcycles'. And it did work. But the most courageous response came not from Britain or America, but from Europe. Ducati, MV Agusta, Laverda and BMW, rather than trying to compete with Japan's bargain-pricing, upped the ante by building a series of beautiful, high-performing and frequently hand-made sports bikes. They cost much more — often three or four times more — than the Japanese bikes, claiming the high end of the motorcycle market with expensive masterpieces. Laverda's twin-cylinder 750SF was one of those bikes. Borrowing from Britain's much loved parallel-twin heritage but equally from Honda's quality control and styling copybook, Laverda's big twin was a counter-punch to the Japanese onslaught. Alas, Laverda's efforts weren't enough to save the company for long. But they were enough to give the world some glorious motorbikes. This one, being offered from New Caledonia by a seller willing to ship to Australia, looks like a superb example. See more photos here.
